Boost Mobile Prepaid Visa Credit Card

Boost Mobile is a wireless telecommunications company that specializes in prepaid wireless phones. In 2005, the company decided to partner with Green Dot, a financing company, to offer a prepaid Visa card that could be used at all major retailers. This card would track purchases and then offer a 10 percent rebate on Boost Mobile products and services. However, as of November 2009, Green Dot and Boost Mobile ended the Visa Prepaid promotion.

    The Process

  1. Prior to the cancellation of the program, Boost Mobile customers could add money to the Green Dot prepaid Visa cards--either online or at a branch location--and use the card at all major retailers that accept VISA cards. Each purchase made with the account--regardless of whether or not it was a purchase at Boost Mobile--would add Boost Mobile points to their wireless account, which, in turn, could be converted into minutes, products and other reductions in cost. The partnership between Green Dot and Boost Mobile caused a stir in the telecommunications world and motivated other companies to pursue similar programs.
  2. Current Green Dot Customers

  3. Current Green Dot cardholders can still use their VISA cards up until the expiration date on the card. After the expiration date has passed, Green Dot will reissue new VISA debit cards which can be used in a similar fashion. As of November 2009, Boost Mobile will no longer be adding any Boost Mobile points to any cardholders' wireless account. Customers can still use their Boost Mobile VISA cards to make purchases--including those at Boost Mobile, like adding minutes and purchasing accessories--and the new cards can be used in the same way.
  4. New Strategy

  5. Boost Mobile has decided to use more up-front money-saving options for its customers. For example, the company offers an unlimited plan--that includes texts, calls and Internet--for a flat rate. This offer is rare in the prepaid wireless world. Boost Mobile's attempt to draw new customers with the prepaid VISA card was not a failure, but the executive management at the company decided to offer more simpler terms for its customers.
