If you have ever experienced a lengthy power outage you know how difficult it can be--when the power goes off so does the refrigerator, the heat and the other conveniences of modern life. Having a Coleman generator in your home will give you a way to keep those vital appliances running until the power comes back on, but it is important to know what to do if the generator will not start.

    Check the Fuel

  1. When a Coleman generator does not start the most likely cause is stale fuel. Many models of Coleman generators are particularly sensitive to fuel quality, and that means that stale fuel can cause serious starting problems. If the fuel in your generator has been there for a little while it may have degraded to the point where the generator will not start, so first drain the fuel tank and replace the old fuel with fresh fuel. It is a good idea to grab an extra can of fuel if bad weather is expected--this will help you overcome possible fuel problems and allow your generator to run longer if the lights go out.
  2. Check the Spark Plug

  3. The spark plug is another common source of trouble for many Coleman generators. Some Coleman generator models were notorious for flooding during repeated starting attempts, so if your generator is not starting as it should, be sure to remove the spark plug cover and examine the spark plug for traces of fuel. If the spark plug is fouled you may be able to clean and replace it, but it is a good idea to keep a few extra spark plugs on hand just in case.
  4. Check the Air Filter

  5. If the air filter on your Coleman generator has become clogged or dirty it may impede airflow and interfere with how your generator starts and runs. If your generator is starting hard or running poorly it is important to check the filter for dirt and debris. If the filter is just a little dirty you may be able to clean it, but replacing it may be a better choice. Keep in mind that operating your Coleman generator in a dusty area will reduce filter life greatly, so be sure to keep a few extra filters on hand if you operate your generator under dusty conditions.
