Homemade Woodchuck Repellent

Woodchucks are unfriendly lawn pests that can cause a tremendous amount of damage to a landscape. While there are several pest-control products on the market, these can be expensive items. Instead, make a simple homemade woodchuck repellent from inexpensive ingredients around the home.

Eggs

Woodchucks are naturally repelled by the smell of rotten eggs. Break an egg open over the opening of each woodchuck hole opening, then cover the hole with dirt. Repeat as needed until all holes are covered, and this should keep woodchucks at bay for a few weeks, by which time they most likely have moved on to a new location. If woodchucks do re-emerge, simply repeat the egg procedure every few weeks.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is also an inexpensive repellent, and can be purchased for a few dollars per bottle at any grocery store. Place a spoonful in each woodchuck hole opening, then cover over with dirt. In a spray bottle, mix two cups of water with one-half cup of Castor oil. Spray this solution around the lawn and garden, and repeat every two to three weeks, or as needed to keep woodchucks off the property.

Pepper

Pepper is yet another inexpensive element that will repel woodchucks. Grab a bottle of chili pepper, cayenne pepper or any other powdered pepper from the herb section of your grocery store, then sprinkle a spoonful into each woodchuck hole opening. In a spray bottle, mix two cups of warm water with four spoonfuls of the pepper and stir to dissolve. Spray around the lawn and garden to repel woodchucks for a few weeks, at which time you simply need to re-spray.
