A pop-up book has equal emphasis on the story and images. Each page can contain one or two paragraphs that accompany a pop-up illustration. Write a short story or select a poem containing brief paragraphs that can be illustrated. Divide the paragraphs and plan the images for each page.
A pop-up book has thick pages to accommodate attached shapes. You'll need construction paper and supplies including a ruler, glue, pencil, scissors, markers and crayons.
Prepare a template for each pop-up page by folding a sheet of construction paper in half, connecting the short sides. Mark two equal lines perpendicular to the fold and on the folded edge. Cut the lines to form a tab for a pop-up image. Determine how many tabs are needed for each page (i.e., how many pop-up images are on each page).
Open the folded sheet and pull up each tab so it protrudes. Close the sheet along the fold so the tabs are pointed away from the folded edge (the folds on the tabs are inverted).
Position the sheet so that the short sides are facing up (i.e., fold is horizontal). Below the tabs, draw a box or lines for text placement. -
Prepare templates for each page. Draw images for each tab and cut out the images. Print out each text block to fit the space below the tabs. Assemble each pop-up page by gluing an image to a tab and illustrating around the images, as desired. Write or paste the text block on each page.
Place each closed pop-up page sequentially and align the folded edges. Tape or glue the back of the bottom page to the back of the next top page. For example, glue the back of page 2 (page containing the text block) to the facing page (back of page 3). Continue until all pages are connected. If desired, attach a cover by gluing a longer sheet of construction paper to the top and back sheets of the stack.
