- Keep your carbohydrate content low, especially for the first two weeks of a high protein diet. Most diets that restrict carbohydrates recommend a maximum of 20 grams of carbohydrates daily to encourage fast weight loss. Carbohydrates should be added gradually (5 to 10 per week) until you are consuming a maintenance level of approximately 120 carbs daily. Foods such as bread, potatoes, processed foods, and some fruits should be limited throughout the duration of a high protein diet.
- Foods such as meat and eggs contain high levels of protein and few if any carbohydrates. These foods can be consumed in abundance when you are on a high protein diet. Nuts and cheese are also high in protein and low in carbohydrates and can be eaten to some degree. Usually three oz of cheese and nuts or less can be eaten daily when on a high protein diet. Lettuce, broccoli, mushrooms, onions and some other vegetables are also low in carbohydrates and can supplement a high protein diet plan. Vegetables should be limited to two cups or less during the early portion of a high protein/low carb diet to keep carbohydrates under 20 grams.
- When the kidneys process high amounts of protein, they are also forced to process excess nitrogen. High protein diets may lead to kidney stones and a decrease in kidney function. Increase liquids to counteract the harmful effects of excess protein on the kidneys. Water intake should be at least 64 oz or more daily. Milk and sugary drinks should not be consumed on a high protein diet, as they are usually high in carbohydrate content.
