How Do I Sync an iPhone Without Losing My Contacts?

The iPhone has the ability to hold contacts from multiple places including mail programs, address books and other address applications. Oftentimes people will want to sync their iPhone with their computer so the software is updated on both devices and your data is available in both places. Some people find it difficult to sync their phone with their computer without deleting their contacts. Syncing your iPhone while keeping your contacts safe takes only a few steps.

Connecting the iPhone

  • To set up your iPhone for a sync, turn the iPhone on and plug the USB cord into the bottom of the phone. Turn on the computer you wish to sync the iPhone with and launch the iTunes application. If the computer is a PC without iTunes already installed, go to the Apple website and download and install the application. If the computer is a Macintosh, iTunes will automatically be installed. Once iTunes is running, plug in the iPhone. The iPhone will appear as an icon in the left menu bar.

  • Once the iPhone is plugged in and recognized by iTunes, you will want to back up the iPhone. To do this, click the iPhone icon in the left menu. This will bring up a summary of the iPhone as well as options. Click “Restore.” Click "Yes" when asked if you want to back up your data on the iPhone.

Finishing the Sync

  • Once the restore process has finished, the iPhone will be wiped clean and will restart. Keep the iPhone plugged in until it restarts. As soon as your main menu appears on the iPhone, iTunes will recognize that the phone is empty and will ask you whether you wish to restore the phone from a backup. Select the name of your iPhone and sync it. Your iPhone will now be synced to the new computer with all of your old contacts.
