Homemade Hair Softeners

Save

Shampooing every day can strip your hair of its natural oils, making you more reliant on commercial conditioners or salon treatments for softening. Cut back on shampoo frequency and take the time to concoct a homemade hair-softening mixture to pamper your locks at home, chemical-free and with minimal time and effort. You'll also avoid wasteful packaging and save money to boot.

Hair Detox

  • Give your hair a break from the harsh ingredients in salon and drugstore shampoos and conditioners. Hairstyles often look better after skipping a day of washing, and daily washing can adversely affect your hair's pH balance. When you abstain from your hair-cleansing routine for a day, you also avoid the damaging effects of a blow dryer.

Natural Shampoo

  • In lieu of shampoo, restore softness naturally by using a solution of 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 1/4 cup of warm or hot water. Use less if your hair is shorter and slightly more if it's longer. Apply to your hair starting at the roots and work it through to the end. Wait up to 3 minutes and then rinse.

Natural Conditioners

  • Apple cider vinegar does double duty as an after-shampoo conditioner. It removes buildup from the hair and scalp and leaves a smooth hair shaft. Mix 3 cups of distilled water with a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar and rinse with cold water for extra shine. Use this concoction once or twice weekly. Rosemary not only softens hair, but it smells great, too. Combine 20 to 25 drops of rosemary essential oil with 4 ounces of olive or vegetable oil. Apply weekly and rinse for luscious locks and scalp stimulation. This herb is thought to darken hair, and it may help you combat grays.

Deep Conditioning

  • For a weekly deep conditioner for all hair types, blend 1/2 cup raw honey with 2 tablespoons of high-quality olive oil and apply it to your hair, massaging the mixture into your scalp. If you have dry hair, use more olive oi. Warming the oil boosts the hydrating effect. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave the oil-honey mixture on for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. Honey has antiseptic properties and nourishes the hair and scalp.
