The best Christmas gift for your boss is something that you know they will love. Although there's no guarantee your present will be a hit, bosses generally appreciate gifts that relieve stress. After all, being a boss is often rife with tension and anxiety. Knowing the personality, hobbies, likes and dislikes of your boss will put you on the right path to choosing an appropriate Christmas gift.

    Investigate

  1. If you are not close to your boss, look around their desk. Take note of any photographs, art and other office décor, such as plants. Try to find out what kind of music they like. You can also ask the boss' assistant for ideas and inspiration. Once you have an idea of what your boss likes, shopping for a stress-relieving Christmas gift will be easier and much more fun.
  2. Beyond the Basic

  3. Although most people think of those little balls that you squeeze to ease stress, there are broader gift categories that qualify as stress relief. Some examples are: a digital picture frame that they can fill with images of loved ones or pets, a beautiful and easy-to-care for plant, or a paperweight with some sugar-fine, white sand and a delicate seashell inside. These are all things that can fill the mind with peace and happiness when you look at them. Another option that is often overlooked is a gift card to a movie theatre, including a popcorn and soda.
  4. Music

  5. Music is a popular gift at Christmastime. A good guide when selecting stress-relieving music is to choose something that transports you to another place and slows your heart rate. Be careful, though, not to choose a genre that you know your boss dislikes. Stress-relieving music doesn't have to be New Age or classical; even slower rock songs can reduce stress. If you still aren't sure about what type of music to get her, but know she has an iPod or MP3 player, give her a gift card to iTunes with a note instructing her to use it to download relaxing tunes to her music library.
  6. Gifts to Avoid

  7. Unless you know your boss really likes scented candles or lotion, stay away from gifts that can be considered too personal. While laughter can certainly ease stress, keep in mind your boss's sense of humor if you're leaning toward a humorous calendar or book. According to Jo Bennett, a partner at New York-based executive search firm, Battalia Winston International, stay away from anything obscene, vulgar, sexist or racist. Not only could you offend the boss, but you might inadvertently offend co-workers, too.
