Homemade Basketball Decorations

Decorating your child's bedroom or decorating for a special party using a basketball theme is not difficult. Use your imagination and creativity to make some fun, inexpensive crafts. The basketball fan will love that you went through all the trouble of making homemade basketball decorations just for him; he could even help make them for some family fun.

  • Make lots of homemade basketballs using Styrofoam in all different sizes. Choose your size or sizes, then you will need orange and black paint. Not all paint is Styrofoam-friendly; make sure you choose paint that has Styrofoam listed on the label. Paint the entire ball in orange, study a real basketball and make the appropriate markings with black paint. You can even have your child autograph them like a real pro player. Once the balls are dried, hang them from the ceiling with string or twine.

For homemade basketball decorations and party themes go to a dollar store and see if you can find lightweight party favor balls or ping pong balls painted to look like basketballs. Hot glue them to party streamers and decorate with them wherever a basketball touch is needed.

  • Make your own basketball court using an empty oatmeal container or paper towel roll for the basketball pole. If you want a taller pole, use a gift-wrap cardboard tube. You and your child can paint them or decorate them any way you like. For a hoop, add a pipe cleaner bent into a circle or a small plastic cup with the bottom cut out and hot glue it to your pole. Add some netting material or tulle to make the net. Glue the pole to some thick cardboard to provide balance. You can use a large piece of cardboard and make court markings to jazz it up. Play this as a game at a child's party or just for a homemade basketball decoration. Play ball with orange pom poms so the whole thing does not come tumbling down.

Decorating Ideas

  • For some quick and easy homemade basketball decorations, use inexpensive, bright-colored basketball jerseys from a discount store as wall decorations. You can also use them for decorating the backs of chairs by slipping them over the back of the chair.

Another homemade basketball decoration idea is to make pennants and banners. The Texas Reading Club has a pattern you can use. Use the pattern to cut pennants out of felt, craft foam, poster board or cardstock. Decorate with colored markers, stickers and any other decorations you wish to add. The HP Creative Studio has free NBA team artwork you can use for inspiration or to decorate your pennant.
