Home Remedy for Making Whites White

Save

Keeping clothes bright and white can be a task in and of itself. As clothing becomes dirty and stained through daily wear and tear, it is especially hard to get the dirt and residue out. While bleach is always an alternative to aid in whitening, it can also contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to ourselves and the environment. Instead, use your own whitening techniques to keep whites bright and fresh.

Lemon Juice

  • Lemon juice is a natural whitening agent that works perfectly for brightening white clothes. During your regular wash cycle, simply add one cup of lemon juice to the load, and run in the regular wash cycle. Clothing will quickly become brightened, and have a fresh citrus scent.

Baking Soda

  • Baking soda not only deodorizes and cleans, but also brightens white clothing. In the wash, add one cup of baking soda to your regular wash cycle. Clothes will come out smelling fresh and clean, and also turn a brighter shade of white. Repeat with every load of white clothing to keep brights looking their best.

Dishwasher Detergent

  • Dishwasher detergent contains natural whitening elements that are not nearly as harsh as liquid bleach. During your wash cycle, add either a dishwasher detergent tablet, or the same amount of detergent you would typically add to the dishwasher when cleaning a load of dishes. Repeat as necessary to keep whites looking and smelling their best.

Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent that brightens whites with ease. With each load of white clothing, add a cup of hydrogen peroxide, and wash as you normally would. The peroxide costs around a dollar per bottle at any grocery or drug store, and works wonderfully in restoring the bright appearance of white clothing and linens.

Sunlight

  • Sunlight is a natural bleaching agent for clothing. After washing whites in a regular wash cycle, hang these items outside on the clothing line, in direct sunlight. Leave for a few hours, and the sunlight will naturally bleach the white colors, giving clothes a fresh feel and brighter look.
