- Too much light or too little light can be harmful for orchids. Set up your orchids in a window, with the curtain or blinds closed between the plant and the glass. This will filter the light down to the right amount of light for your orchid. If you use curtains that are very dark and block out all of the light, this will not work. You will need mini-blinds or a light curtain. You can also put your orchid in a window facing south. It is important for the plant to receive strong, indirect sunlight. If black blotches develop on the plant, it is getting too much light.
- Give your orchids water every five to 10 days. Watering more than this could drown the roots of the plant. Water closer to every five days during the warm summer months and closer to 12 days over the cooler winter months. Depending on the type of orchid you have, some will need to dry out completely between each watering and other will want to stay moist. Follow the instructions for your specific orchid type.
- An orchid should be able to remain in its original pot for up to two years. When the roots have spouted over the side of the pot and continue to grow longer, the pot is past the time it needs to be replanted. When re-potting, remove any dead roots. After replanting the orchid, wait a week before resuming your watering routine.
