Recipe for Liquid Fence to Repel Deer

Deer can be beautiful creatures, but can also turn into pesky nuisances, as they feed off of plants and can destroy a garden or flowerbed in a short period of time. While several retail products claim to work as deer repellents, these can be expensive items that are not always effective. Instead, make your own repellent that can be sprinkled around the perimeter to work as a liquid fence, keeping deer away from your home and garden.

Pepper

  • Pepper emits a strong odor that will repel deer with ease. Make a solution of one gallon water, one-half cup liquid dish detergent (to work as an adhesive), and any combination of two cups red pepper, cayenne pepper or chili pepper. Mix all of these ingredients together, then either pour into a spray bottle and spray around the perimeter, or pour around the perimeter of the home to create a liquid fence. The strong smell of the pepper will repel deer, while the liquid dish detergent will create a sticky element that will help the solution stick to plants and grass for an extended period of time. Repeat every two weeks, or as necessary to keep deer away from the home.

Eggs

  • Eggs are also another natural repellent, especially as they become rotten and emit an even stronger odor. In a bucket, combine one gallon water, six whisked eggs, and one-half cup liquid dish detergent. Pour into a spray bottle and spray on grass and plant leaves, or pour around the perimeter of the lawn to create a liquid barrier that deer will not cross. Repeat every two weeks, or as necessary to keep deer at bay.

Garlic

  • Garlic is another food that emits a strong odor that is unattractive to deer. Garlic can be used in a variety of ways. One way is to simply chop a few cloves of garlic or mince into small pieces, and sprinkling around the lawn and flowerbeds to keep deer away. Alternately, and possibly the easiest way, is to pour one gallon of water and stir in a bottle of garlic powder (use the cheapest brand you can find at your grocery store). Pour into a spray bottle and spray onto plant leaves, grass and soil, or pour the solution around the perimeter of the home, creating a liquid fence that will repel deer with ease.
