Remedy for Bloating From a High Fiber Diet
You decide you are going to do what it takes to look and feel your best and begin eating a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. You're now eating plenty of fiber, but your digestive system is not thanking you for it. Instead of feeling slim and vital, you're feeling bloated and gassy. What do you do to stop the bloat while keeping the high fiber diet?

Gas and Bloating

Gas and bloating is caused by bacteria in the gut as they break down food. Certain foods take more effort to break down, causing more gas to be produced in the digestive process. While abdominal gas and slight bloating is normal, severe bloating can be very uncomfortable and can lead to potentially embarrassing situations. Too many high fiber foods added to the diet at once can put digestive bacteria into over drive, causing bloating and gas. Not adding enough water to the diet to compensate for the additional fiber can add to the problem as well.

Add fiber rich food to your diet slowly. Add a new food every two or three days to give your digestive system a chance to adjust to the changing workload. If you already have added a lot of fiber, you can either wait for your system to adjust, if you are not too uncomfortable. You can also take a few foods out, let your body get regulated and then add them back in one at a time.

Increase Your Fluids

Be sure to add some water to your daily intake as you slowly increase the amount of fiber rich food to your diet. If you are introducing a new food, drink an extra half glass of water per day along with it. This will help to prevent constipation and keep things running smoothly. Aim for a total of eight to ten glasses of water per day, or 64 to 80 ounces. Not only will the water help the fiber to push out solid waste from the body, it will also flush toxins out of the kidney. Your skin will look better and your water retention will drop. Between less water weight and the reduction of bloat, you will look and feel slimmer and more energetic.
Bloat Producing Foods

Take a look at what foods you are eating, as they may be the culprit. Broccoli, beans, cabbage and onions are typical culprits for producing gas. You can either avoid them or try preparing them in a different way. Rinsing beans well before eating them or using them in dishes removes the starch that produces most of the gas from eating beans.
