Home Remedy for Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums can be caused by a number of factors. The main cause of bleeding gums is gingivitis, a form of periodontal disease. Gums can also bleed due to poor oral hygiene. If your gums bleed often while you brush, you should visit your dentist immediately so a proper diagnosis can be made. In the meantime there are a few things you can do at home to reduce bleeding from your gums.

Natural Remedies for Bleeding Gums

  • When bleeding is caused by swelling, a saline solution works wonders. To make it, mix one glass of lukewarm water with 1 tsp. salt. Rinse with this solution twice a day to increase circulation in your gums and reduce bleeding and swelling.

Another common household item that can stop bleeding is black tea. Hold a wet tea bag against the area of your gums that is bleeding. This method works because tea leaves contain tannic acid, a natural astringent. It is also said to have pain-relieving properties.

Baking soda can be used to treat gum bleeding caused by gingivitis or other forms of periodontal disease. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply to the affected area. Use this home remedy once every few days. Overuse has the potential of actually irritating gum tissue further.

  • Diet is also an important factor when it comes to bleeding gums. Increase your intake of organic fruits and vegetables to promote gum health. If you do not get enough vitamin C from foods, take a supplement. Vitamin C is essential for tissue health, including the health of your gums. Avoid sugary and starchy foods as well as crunchy foods that can aggravate sensitive gums and cause further bleeding.

Oral Hygiene

  • Many times bleeding is caused by improper oral hygiene. Pay attention to the way you floss and brush your teeth. Your gums may bleed during flossing if you're not accustomed to flossing regularly. Floss every day at least once, preferably before bedtime. Remember to wrap the floss around each tooth to remove plaque thoroughly. Since a hard toothbrush can also be to blame, use a soft toothbrush to gently brush your teeth. Be especially careful around the gum areas. Finish your oral hygiene routine by rinsing with warm water mixed with an over-the-counter mouth wash. Developing and sustaining good oral hygiene habits is the best way to stop gums from bleeding and to prevent it in the future.
