Memory foam is a fairly new material used to make mattresses. After being designed by NASA in the 1970s, it hit the consumer market in the 1990s. Adding a memory foam mattress pads makes a traditional bed more comfortable. Memory foam mattresses and pads need extra care to provide years of night-time comfort.

    Unpacking

  1. Memory foam bed toppers come wrapped tightly in plastic. Do not cut the plastic from the memory foam, because it is easy to damage with scissors. Instead, open the plastic by hand. Also unfold your large mattress pad carefully, so you don't rip it.
  2. Airing Out

  3. New memory foam can have a strong chemical smell that needs to be aired out before use. This is due to it being packed in plastic, which locks in manufacturing fumes. If you fail to air it out, you may get headaches from the strong smell. Put your mattress pad in a spare room with open windows to air it out. Using a fan to blow air across the mattress will speed the process.
  4. Protection

  5. The best way to keep your memory foam clean is to prevent soiling in the first place. Purchase a mattress cover to protect it. Having a mattress cover may save you the cost of buying a new memory foam mattress due to excessive soiling.
  6. Spot Cleaning

  7. Even with the best precautions, memory foam can still get dirty. Spot-clean soiling soon after it happens. An enzymatic pet stain remover should remove any stains caused by bodily fluids. Just dampen the stain with the product, and blot it dry. You can also clean stains with hydrogen peroxide, but it will discolor the foam.
  8. Thorough Cleaning

  9. When your entire memory foam is soiled, attempt to clean it before discarding it. Put your memory foam mattress in a bathtub or on a large, clean, flat surface outside. Wet down the memory foam. Mix a solution of one part Woolite to two parts water, and spray the entire mattress or topper. Allow the solution to sit on your mattress for a half-hour, and then rinse it thoroughly with clean water.

Allow the mattress to drain and dry before putting it back on the bed. Do not attempt to twist or wring out the mattress, because you may damage it. Use a fan to speed up the drying process. Do not attempt to lift a damp or wet memory foam mattress on your own, because will be very heavy.
