When people have trouble losing weight on their own, they may enlist the assistance of a weight-loss clinic. Inch by Inch Weight Loss Solutions is an authorized Ideal Protein Weight Loss clinic based in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The Ideal Protein program is high in protein and very low in carbohydrates. Dietary Approach

  • The Ideal Protein program was originally developed by French physician Chanh Tran Tien, M.D., to help athletes preserve muscle and regulate the blood sugar hormone insulin. It is now a medical weight-loss program available only through authorized clinics in Europe, Canada and the U.S. The program is meant to promote weight loss by depleting your body's carbohydrate reserves, otherwise known as a ketogenic diet. It requires you to purchase specially formulated Ideal Protein meals and receive coaching from a clinic staff member. You get to choose from a variety drinks, breakfasts, entrees, snacks and desserts. The meals are formulated to provide your muscles with the necessary protein to sustain themselves during weight loss. You can expect to spend about $92 dollars, or $105 Canadian dollars, on Ideal Protein food per week during phase one.

Diet Phases

  • The Ideal Protein diet has four phases. Initially you replace nearly all of your meals with Ideal Protein meals and gradually work your way up to regular meals. In phase one you replace three of your four meals with Ideal Protein meals. When you've reach 70 to 80 percent of your weight-loss goal, you move on to phase two, in which you cut back to two Ideal Protein meals and have two regular meals low in carbs and fat. Once you've reached your goal weight, you add back in a moderate amount of carbs and fat over the course of 14 days. In stage four you return to a regular diet and maintain your weight by making healthy food choices.

Ketogenic Diet Effectiveness

  • The "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" published a study in January 2008 evaluating the effectiveness of a high-protein, ketogenic diet compared to a high-protein, moderate-carb diet. Over a four-week study period, the high-protein, ketogenic diet caused significantly greater weight loss, lower hunger and lower food intake than the high-protein, moderate-carb, nonketogenic diet.

Sample Menu

  • Examples of breakfasts on the program are Ideal Protein oatmeal or Ideal Protein pancakes with syrup. A typical lunch is Ideal Protein chicken soup with vegetables and lettuce. If dinner is your "regular" meal, expect to have high-protein, low-carb, low-fat options such as chicken breast with vegetables, turkey with vegetables or beef with vegetables. Some snacks you can choose from include Ideal Protein Coconut Almond Fudge Bar and Ideal Protein Butterscotch Pudding.
