The Best Insulation to Help Deaden Sound

Sound deadening is a process common when building home theatres and other rooms that need to limit the noise that comes and goes. Because sound travels in waves, there is no way to completely deaden the sound. Even insulation will not totally stop the waves from penetrating through. However, there are ways to insulate a room enough to significantly reduce the sound.

  • There are several different types of insulation on the market specifically designed to help dampen sound in a room. These come in both liquid and solid form. The relatively new liquid form typically has a very fast dry rate and, as such, can be sprayed into place very quickly. Once it hardens, it provides the same sound-deadening properties as the much more well-known solid insulation. The solid form, often referred to as acoustic batt insulation, is installed in almost the same way as regular insulation. It is stapled into place and covered by the outer drywall layer.

Wall Material

  • Sound dampening doesn't end with the inner insulation. To complete the deadening process, the proper choice of wall material is equally important. An often-used method involves the installation of special fiber sound board directly over the dampening insulation. This acts as a more rigid second layer of insulation, on top of which standard drywall can be installed. This final process provides as much sound deadening as you will be able to achieve with standard building materials.
