Coccyx Pain Relief

A fracture and poor posture can contribute to coccyx or tailbone pain. Coccyx pain can be acute and last for a few days or weeks, or develop into a chronic problem, wherein the tailbone remains inflamed for several months or years. Fortunately, there are several techniques to relieve coccyx pain.

Relieve Inflammation with Medication

  • Acute or mild coccyx pain generally responds to anti-inflammatory medications. You can self-treat tailbone pain at home with medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. If you don't receive the desired results, ask your doctor for recommendations. Oftentimes, relieving coccyx pain calls for a prescription anti-inflammatory, wherein you doctor may prescribe a medication such as Motrin, prednisone or codeine.

Results vary; on average, it can take days or weeks for medications to work. However, if coccyx pain continues or worsens, consider a cortisone injection. A doctor will inject a powerful medication (steroids) directly into the tailbone to help reduce inflammation and stop pain.

Apply a Cold Pack to the Coccyx

  • Cold therapy is effective for coccyx pain. Lying on your side or back, apply a cold cloth or ice pack to your tailbone as needed throughout the day for pain relief. Cold therapy numbs sore joints and muscles and has several other health benefits such as reducing inflammation and swelling. Apply the ice pack to your tailbone for 20 minutes, remove for 20 minutes, and repeat.

Get Rid of Constipation

  • Falling on the tailbone and improper posture are common culprits of coccynx pain. However, tailbone pain can also result from constipation or the inability to pass soft stools. Fortunately, there are quick and simple ways to relieve constipation and stop coccyx pain.

Increase your fiber intake and drink plenty of water (at least eight glasses a day) to keep your stools soft and regular. Eat between 20 and 35 grams of fiber a day, or experiment with a fiber supplement to promote digestive heath. Fiber foods include whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits.

Use a Doughnut Pillow

  • Coccyx pain tends to worsen while sitting for a long period, which can interfere with your ability to work or drive. Until pain and inflammation subsides, sit on a doughnut pillow. These pillows are designed for people with tailbone pain, and they feature a hole in the center. Thus, you're able to sit without placing additional pressure on your coccyx. Doughnut pillows can reduce pain and speed your recovery.
