Types of Door Bells

You hear the ringing of your doorbell a few times a day, so research into which type is best suited to your needs is important. Each type of doorbell has a different set of common problems and benefits, and the installations range from very simple to needing an electrician.

Significance

  • Doorbells are much easier to hear than someone standing at your door and knocking. With a large house or one that is two or three stories high, it can be virtually impossible to hear someone knocking, unless you are in the main portion of the home. Music or TV playing in other parts of the house or just the washing machine can drown out the sound of someone knocking at your door. Doorbells are necessary for most homes today, you certainly do not want a guest waiting on your front porch when it is rainy or freezing weather while you blithely go about your daily chores.

Types

  • There are two types of doorbells, wired and wireless. Their prices range from very inexpensive to higher-end door chime systems. You can get a doorbell as cheap as $15 or they can go up to $200 or $300.

Most homes have wired doorbells. These require a one-time installation and the fee varies depending on the model, but they are usually less expensive than wireless models. Most wired doorbells will last 10 years or longer. This type has one direct line, which extends from the button to the receiver. Wired doorbells do not have to limit your sound choices. They can have just your basic buzz or ding dong, or be wired to emit your own customized music. If you have a basement or other room that is far from the main door, the doorbell can be wired with sound extenders or amplifiers. Wired doorbells come in a wide variety of styles and décor to help meet your decorating needs. Most people are not handy with wiring, and this type may require an electrician for installation.

Wireless doorbells have been around since the early 1990's and have virtually transformed doorbells into luxury items. These doorbells have ranges that can be increased up to 3000 feet. Some involve an elaborate intercom system. Other models are weatherproof and are handy when you do not have a covered porch area. These doorbells can have superior CD sound quality with their speakers and microphones. (See Reference 2) Wireless doorbells come in every style and décor to fit your home needs. They are portable and are great for apartment dwellers and people who use motor homes periodically throughout the year. Installation is quite simple, you can just place it on your door with double-sided tape or you can screw it into the wood. Most wireless types require batteries, although there are some that can be plugged in if you have an electrical outlet nearby. Most models come with up to 12 prerecorded songs, but you can download up to 200 songs from your music system or computer. Wireless doorbells do have problems sometimes with frequencies interrupting the signal and something as insignificant as a vacuum can set it off, but most high-end models have frequency jammers to remedy this problem.
