Microsoft Outlook 2007 includes functionality that allows the user to be notified when she receives a new e-mail or meeting request. The notification comes in the form of a small envelope in the system tray at the bottom right of the desktop, next to the clock. This icon appears when a new email message has arrived in Microsoft Outlook 2007.

    Open Microsoft Outlook

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2007 on your computer. Go to the "Start" button on the bottom left of the desktop. Click on it. Move up to and click "All Programs." Move to the right and find Microsoft Outlook. The Outlook program is sometimes under the "Microsoft Office" section.
  2. Find Email Options

  3. Go to the top left of the Microsoft Outlook window, and click on "Tools." At the bottom of the menu that appears, click "Options." In the Options window, click the "Preferences" tab. Find and click on the "E-mail Options" button.
  4. Change preferences

  5. Find the "Advanced E-mail Options" button, and click on it. In the box that appears, you will find a few items that have check marks next to them. Find "Show an envelope icon in the notification area" and click on the box next to it. A check mark should appear. Click on OK on each of the boxes to close them. An envelope icon should now appear in your system tray.
