Lightsabers are the ever popular weapon used in the Star Wars movies. From the classic blue lightsaber to the double-sided red lightsaber of Darth Maul, you can create them all for you or your children to enjoy. From quick balloon lightsabers to more advanced glowing lightsabers, you can make the perfect lightsaber for every Jedi you know. Find out how to make your lightsaber glow and the best way to make a lightsaber from simple materials around your home.

    Balloon Lightsaber

  1. According to Zakka Life at Blogspot.com, balloons can be used to quickly create safe lightsabers for a party or for younger kids. They work for people of all ages and are sure not to poke someone's eye out. Choose a balloon made for creating balloon animals in the color you want for your lightsaber. Inflate the balloon all the way so it is several feet long. Next, take an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll and use markers to draw buttons and decorations on it. This will be the handle of your lightsaber. If you want a two-ended lightsaber like Darth Maul has, slide the empty roll onto the balloon and push it to the center. If you want a regular lightsaber, leave the roll on one end of the balloon and use tape to hold it in place.
  2. Broom Handle Lightsaber

  3. Any long, thin object that is slightly round can serve as a makeshift home lightsaber. A wooden broom handle works well for this. Take the broom handle and cut it down to a size that feels comfortable for you. The rounded tip of the handle will be the tip of the lightsaber while the other end will serve as the handle. Sand the flat end and the sides if needed to avoid splinters. Next, spray paint the broom the color you want your lightsaber to be. Make sure to wear a mask and work in a ventilated area. After the paint has dried, cover the end that will serve as the handle with thick black tape. You can use electrical tape or duct tape for this. Use paint markers or acrylic paint to draw buttons on the tape.
  4. Glowing Lightsabers

  5. Finkbuilt.com suggests using a flashlight to create a glowing lightsaber. You'll need a large plastic tube that is white but still translucent enough for light to shine through. Finkbuilt.com suggests the plastic tubes inside a roll of plotter paper found at offices. Take this tube and attach a flashlight to the end to serve as the handle. The flashlight should be the same size as the opening of the plastic tube. Turn the flashlight on and make sure the light is strong enough to make the tube glow. Cover the end of the flashlight with colored plastic, such as colored saran wrap or a colored plastic bag, and use a rubber band to hold it in place. Then use tape to secure the flashlight to the plastic tube. When you turn the flashlight on, your lightsaber will glow the color of the wrap on the flashlight.
