If you've ever wondered what a daring new haircut would look like on you but don't want to jump into it without seeing what it might look like, a virtual haircut could be what you're looking for. Using virtual makeover software, you can try haircuts and styles to see what they would look like, without touching your hair. Simply upload a picture and start playing with cuts, highlights and colors. Save the ones you like to show your hairdresser.

Finding a Program

Many virtual makeover programs on the Internet show you how haircuts, styles and colors would look. To use them, you'll need to load the program and find a good picture of yourself. There are free programs as well as those that require you to purchase them. Start with the free programs. To upload your photo you will need to create an account. After you've created your account, log in to the virtual makeover program. To see how a haircut would look on you, the program needs a catalog of various hairstyles, hair colors and buttons to change the size and position of the hair until it fits. The other features don't matter, but if the program does not have these basic features it will not help you.
Selecting a Photo

Take a photo of yourself facing the camera head-on. Pull your hair away from your forehead into a ponytail and clip your bangs out of the way. You can leave on glasses unless they create a glare in the photograph. Take the picture somewhere that is well lighted, but won't cause your face to have shadows on it. Let your face fill most of the photograph so you'll be able to see yourself clearly when trying haircuts.
To upload the photograph, open it on your computer and save it as a JPG. This option is found under the "Save As" menu on any photo editing program. Click the drop box beside "Save as type" and choose ".jpg" Next, in the virtual makeover program, click "Upload" and select the image you saved. It may take several minutes to upload depending on your Internet connection speed.
Changing Your Hairstyle

Click the "Hair" or "Hairstyles" tab at the top of the screen to see all the available haircuts in the program you're using. They may show up in a long list to scroll through, or you may be able to choose from a list. Often haircuts will be sorted by length, such as short or long, or by style, such as fancy or casual. Choose the types that fit you best and scroll through the options. When you find a haircut you like, click on it to load it onto your picture. Once it loads, click the "+" and "-" buttons to make it larger or smaller so it is the right size. Drag it onto your head and adjust it until it fits where your hair should go. Play around with different haircuts and save the ones you like.
