Easy Powdery Mildew Removal

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that infects plants and grass. There are several options for easy treatment and removal of powdery mildew. Many treatments are available right in your home, but commercial fungicide sprays can work as well. Prevention is key in removing powdery mildew from your garden or plants.

  • Skim milk is an easy spray that can be used to treat powdery mildew. Mix one part milk to nine parts water and spray weekly. Do not use full-fat milk, though, as it can turn rancid and invite other diseases to grow.

  • Immediately prune out infected leaves to stop the disease from spreading. Plant stems that are badly infected should be discarded as well.

Baking soda and garlic

  • Garlic is rich in sulfur, which is effective in removing powdery mildew. Crush five cloves of garlic and mix with water in a spray bottle. Use this easy homemade spray for the tops and bottoms of leaves to remove powdery mildew spores.

Baking soda is also effective in removal of powdery mildew and can be easily applied by mixing 1 tsp. baking soda with 1 qt. water. Add this to a spray bottle with a drop of liquid dishwashing soap, which will act as a sticking agent. Test one or two leaves for any sensitivity, and apply the spray to all the leaves if no negative side effects are shown.

  • High humidity, poor air movement and air temperatures between 61-77ºF make an ideal condition for the spread and growth of powdery mildew. To prevent powdery mildew, do not crowd plants, and keep the leaves from touching. Planting in full sunlight helps dry out the humidity, preventing the growth of powdery mildew spores.
