Detox occurs when a harmful or foreign substance, such as alcohol, is being removed from your body. Detox does not treat any specific conditions, but it does allow you to recover from the physical symptoms that persist because of an addiction. While most detox programs can be done at home, it's important to consult a doctor before beginning any program. Exercise can play an important role in detox and helps your system sweat out any remaining toxins.

Withdrawal

  • The most important element that you experience during detox is withdrawal, and it is the initial stage an alcoholic goes through in a program. Removing alcohol from your body is the primary purpose for participating in a detox program. Because your body has become dependent on alcohol to function, this can be extremely difficult and painful. Possible withdrawal side effects, include headaches, vomiting, shakes and delirium.

Process

  • During detox, it's important to drink large amounts of water. By staying hydrated, it allows your body to flush out the remaining alcohol in your system. Long, hot showers and baths can prove beneficial during this time period. Take as many of these as possible, as long as you don't become dehydrated, dizzy or confused. Once you step out of the shower or bath, your body is ready to rehydrate. It's important to replenish your body with potassium, because it is often lost while your body is flushing out liquids. Eating foods, such as oranges, bananas and leafy vegetables can help hydrate your body. Detox programs can last anywhere from 3 to 14 days and help you begin the process of staying sober for the rest of your life.

Exercise

  • Aerobic exercise during detox allows your whole body to begin moving and gets your body fluids circulating. Depending on what your body can handle during detox and what your medical professional recommends, getting 20 to 30 minutes of exercise per day can help your body get through this process. Not only does exercise help you stay healthy, but it also stimulates your internal organs and increases your body temperature. Simple exercises are most effective during detox, and it's important to remain consistent while not pushing your body too far. Exercise such as jogging, biking and swimming can have a positive effect on your body and get your mind off your addiction.
