Lace-front wigs are wigs with a piece of lace netting attached to the front. The lace netting is adhered to the skin in front of the natural hairline. This gives the illusion of a seamless hairline as well as helping to anchor the wig, making it more stable and thus more versatile.

Good lace-front wigs are expensive and should be given painstaking care in order to maintain them.

    Applying Your Lace-Front Wig

  1. Begin with a clean, dry work space.

Gather all the items needed and place them within easy reach so you are not stopping and starting to chase after things.

Clean your face with your usual products. Making sure the skin is dry before you begin.

Secure dry hair to your head in pincurls, making them as flat and close to the scalp as possible.

To make pincurls, take small sections of your hair, curl it up by wrapping it around a finger until the scalp is reached, then secure it in place with two hairpins crossed over each other (it forms an X).

Place a skullcap on the head over the curls to keep them in place.

Line up the front of the wig with the front of your head.

Hold the back of the wig with both hands and slide it over the head from the forehead with the hairline of the wig one to two inches from where you want it to be.

Gently, manipulate the wig back until the hairline is where you want it to be. The end result should have the wig lying just in front of your natural hairline all the way around your head.

Using hairpins in a similar color to the wig, anchor the wig in place. Gently, push the pins through the wig, through the skullcap and into the pincurls.

Next, fold up the lace netting so that it is out of the way.

Apply the spirit gum, in a thin layer, to a small section in the center of your forehead from just before the hairline to the end of where the lace netting will be. Be careful to not get this in your eyes.

With a clean finger, tap the spirit gum until it becomes very tacky.

Roll down the lace netting and press it into it the spirit gum.

Once it holds on its on its own, continue. Be patient: This may take some time.

Repeat the adhesive steps until the entire lace netting has been glued to the skin.

Once the glue is completely dry, apply makeup to your face, making sure to gently blend it into the lace netting.
  2. Removing Your Lace-Front Wig

  3. Take great care with this step to not damage either the wig or your skin.

With a clean brush, apply spirit gum remover or alcohol to the lace netting. Be extremely careful to not get any in your eyes.

When the adhesive has softened it will begin to lift off the skin; use this opportunity to slip the brush under the netting and apply some of the remover from underneath.

Continue applying the remover until the adhesive is completely softened and the majority of the netting has lifted on its own.

At this point you can gently lift the lace netting from the skin; if it sticks in any way, stop and apply more remover until it comes away freely.

Once all the lace netting has been removed, remove all of the hairpins, anchoring the wig to the pincurls.

Gently, holding the wig from the sides, lift the wig off the head from behind toward the forehead (the reverse of how you put it on). Place it on the wig block.

Remove the skullcap, and undo to pincurls.

Wash your face with your usual skin-care products.
  4. Caring For Your Lace-Front Wig

  5. Always remove any remaining adhesive and makeup as soon as possible.

To clean a wig, simply dip it up and down in a wig cleaner. This will not destroy the wig foundation nor release any weave (curl).

Do not use shampoo. This will remove the weave, weaken the netting and cause hopeless matting and tangling, which will break the hair when trying to remove it and effectively ruin the wig.

A gentle detergent solution may be used in place of the wig cleaner; however, it is preferable to use the wig cleaner.

The wig should be put on a wig block or stand while drying or while dressed to maintain the style.

When not in use, the wig should be stuffed with tissue paper and stored in an individual box.
