Many German-language programs focus on speaking and understanding oral German. So, many programs are often deficient in teaching you how to read German. Luckily, once you speak even a little German, you can help yourself improve your reading skills.

    Set Goals

  1. Determine what it is that you want to be able to read. If your goal is to be able to read trade journals or other specialized materials, then focus on a specific vocabulary set before you begin reading.

If you want to improve your reading skills for personal enjoyment, then jump right in without worrying about a specific vocabulary. The vocabulary acquired with conversational skills will expand as you encounter new words and phrases during your readings.
  2. Books

  3. Purchase books written in German. Look for books that interest you or German copies of favorite books that you already own. Books and newspapers develop reading skills quickly and without the necessity of formal lessons.

If you are interested in a specific area, such as law, buy the appropriate books in German language. This is critical if you are planning on working in Germany or with German clients and will need these books as references.

Keep your German-English dictionary handy for when you encounter unfamiliar words and phrases.
  4. Online Help

  5. Visit German-language websites for newspapers and magazines. You will improve your reading skills and stay updated on current events in Germany.

Join German-language forums. These allow you to interact with others in German. You can join forums in special-interest areas or even forums based around a geographic location.

In forums, you read a message and then respond with your opinions or comments. Because these are German-language forums, you will not only improve your reading skills but also your writing and grammar skills.
