Homemade Halloween Costumes for Pets
Halloween is the perfect holiday for the whole family to get out of the house, and enjoy a spooky walk together in the crisp fall air as you gather treats and tricks from your neighbors. Don't leave the family pet at home when he is sure to enjoy the outing as much as everyone else. Use these easy tips to create a homemade costume for Fido, and he is sure to be the hit of the evening.

Pirate
-
Find an old white shirt that fits your animal and allows her to move comfortably. Use scissors to cut the sleeves into ragged strips of fabric, and paint black vertical stripes on the bottom of the shirt. If you have an old red scarf, tie it around your pet's middle so that the stripes on the shirt look like pants. Add gold jewelry around your animal's neck or drape novelty skulls over his head to give him the look of a hardened pirate.
Cowboy
-
If your pet is really skittish about having items draped around them or put over their head, a cowboy costume is a simple solution. The costume can be as simple as a red bandanna tied around Fluffy's neck, or it can be much more elaborate. If you have a child-size cowboy hat, try convincing your pet to let you tie it to her head, and you can make the look more authentic by using a rope, or a lasso, in place of a normal leash.
Ballerina
-
If your pooch is a veritable twinkle toes, finish off her prancing by turning her into a prima ballerina for the evening. Cut the sleeves off of an old pink, purple or black shirt to give it the appearance of a leotard, and add sparkle to the costume with glitter paint. If you have a fairy tutu lying about the house, tie it around your pet's middle to top off the leotard, otherwise craft a simple tutu by tying strips of tulle around an old scarf or belt. Fancy up your pet's paws by tying ribbons up her legs in a criss-cross pattern to represent ballet slippers.
Bumblebee
-
Your furry friend is sure to create a buzz with this easy costume. Paint black stripes on a yellow shirt, or add stripes using black felt and hot glue. Use non-toxic black hairspray coloring (found in the Halloween aisle at any discount store) to dye your animal's tail black to look like a stinger. Be very careful not to get the spray near your pet's eyes or nose, and allow it to dry completely before letting go of him. If you pet is really patient, add a pair of wings. Use felt or craft foam create the wings, then attach them to the shirt with hot glue.
