Perhaps you're looking for something different for your wedding centerpieces and favors. Or maybe you don't want to invest in dozens of glass bowls or vases for your centerpiece, only to never use them again. Cake-slice favor wheels have become a very popular centerpiece item because not only do they serve both purposes, but they are also very cute and original. It's easy to create your own cake-slice favor boxes and personalize them to your taste, helping you save money and give your table a special, original look.
To make 12 cake-slice cake boxes, or a full "cake," you will need 12 sheets of 12-by-12 inch card stock. You can use different colors of paper, such as six pink and six gold, to match your wedding colors. You will also need a crafts knife and double-stick tape.
These cake-slice favor boxes are very simple to make if you use a pre-made box pattern. You can find these online at places such as bhg.com (Better Homes and Gardens). Download the template in PDF form, and then enlarge the template to 200%, and print it. Cut out the template, and then trace the pattern onto the back of each 12-by-12 piece of card stock. Cut each template out. Use the duller side of the craft knife to lightly score the card stock along the fold lines based on where the dotted lines are marked on the template. Fold the card stock along the lines that you scored with the craft knife, then use tape or glue to secure the tabs.
The cake-slice boxes can be decorated in any way you like to match your wedding colors or theme. Use a decorative rubber stamp with ink in a contrasting color to the box. Sprinkle glitter over the stamp for a special sparkle, or rotate several colors based on your paper color. After the boxes are assembled to form a cake, use a ribbon to wrap around the cake, or place a bow or flower on top of the cake in the center.
Fill the boxes with chocolates, personalized M&Ms, or mints. You can also place lottery tickets inside, a special thank-you note, or a family recipe. To display your cake-slice boxes, place them on a cake stand, or on a plate in the center of the table. If you find purchasing cake stands to be out of your price range, purchase glass ice cream containers from a discount store. Flip the container upside down, and glue glass plates to the base. You'll find that they look exactly like cake stands, but cost a fraction of the price.
