The Garmin Forerunner 305 serves as a GPS device and a sports watch. Designed for runners and triathletes, the Forerunner measures distance, speed, time, altitude and pace. Once you become accustomed to the basic functions of the Forerunner, you can learn more about its other important features.

    Courses

  1. The Forerunner can create courses. This feature allows you to build a custom course based on a previously recorded activity, which enables you to try to meet or exceed previous goals. To create a course, select "training," "courses" and "create new" from the main menu. After you enter a name for the course and press "mode," you are ready to start a course by selecting "training," "courses" and "do course" from the main menu. To add points to a course, use the Garmin Training Center software, which comes with your purchase.
  2. Marking Locations

  3. A saved location allows you to store any point you wish in your Forerunner's memory. This feature is especially useful in creating courses and routes which to perform. From the location you wish to mark, mark the location by first selecting "mode" from the main menu. Then select "navigation" and "mark location."

Enter a name, change the symbol at the top left field and change the elevation if you wish. This will enable you to go to this location at a later time and be able to put together courses and routes using locations you have saved.
  4. Setting Zones

  5. You can personalize zones such as pace/speed and your heart rate. These enable you to enter your optimal pace/speed and heart rate zones for a particular exercise and can be used within the advanced training feature, which is especially useful.

Change the pace/speed zones by selecting "settings" from the main menu. Then select a sport, select "pace/speed zones," select a particular zone and enter a minimum and maximum pace/speed value for that zone. Set up your heart-rate zone by selecting "settings" from the main menu. Then select a sport, "hr zones," "zones," "based on max," "max," and enter your maximum heart rate. The heart rate zones will be automatically calculated based on your maximum heart rate.
