Many women experience stretch marks during pregnancy since they form when the skin stretches and grows rapidly. As the skin stretches, it sometimes breaks, causing broken scar tissue that most commonly is recognized as stretch marks. There are a few things to do during pregnancy that can keep stretch marks at a minimum or prevent them from developing altogether.

    Exfoliate

  1. Exfoliation is important in preventing stretch marks, as it not only removes dead skin cells that most easily display discolored stretch marks but also increases circulation in the skin, helping new skin grow more quickly. Use a body brush, wash cloth or loofah to massage the area affected by stretch marks. Exfoliate one to two times per day and follow up with a moisturizer while skin is still damp, as moisturizer will most easily absorb when pores are open after a shower or bath.
  2. Moisturize

  3. When skin is moisturized, it it more elastic, meaning it can stretch more easily without the tearing that leads to stretch marks. Several lotions are available for pregnant women that prevent stretch marks and contain no chemicals harmful to the baby. Other options are natural moisturizers, such as vitamin E, which comes in lotion and capsule form. If using capsules, cut open one end, squeeze out the oil and rub into the skin. Whatever moisturizing option you choose, be sure to moisturize at least two to three times daily.
  4. Hydration

  5. Keeping the body hydrated is important. It improves skin elasticity, which will help prevent stretch marks. Drink at least 2 L of water each day to keep the body and skin fully hydrated and functioning at its best.
  6. Proper Diet

  7. Eating properly also can assist in the prevention of stretch marks. While pregnant, it's easy to consume foods and quantities that you otherwise would not do, but it is important to grow at a steady pace, gaining the average 25 to 30 pounds associated with pregnancy. Eat healthy, vitamin-rich foods that nourish you, your baby and your skin. Leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits are always a healthier alternative than chips and cookies, however hard they may be to decline when a craving strikes.
