Human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) is a hormone produced in both sexes, but is prominent during pregnancy and used in infertility treatments. It is produced in great quantities once the egg becomes fertilized and can be used as an early test to see how the pregnancy is doing when the baby is too small to be seen in an ultrasound. One of its most common uses is as a treatment for both male and female infertility.

    Male Infertility

  1. Male infertility is a common problem that leads to difficulty in conception. Talk with a physician and your doctor may prescribe HCG and will discuss the treatment procedure and to make sure it is the right treatment for you.

You will receive injection of the hormone usually on a daily basis, but the exact times will be determined by the doctor. There are oral alternatives to the injections as well. The injections or pills will stimulate the body's production of testosterone and increase healthy sperm production. The doctor may also use the hormone in conjunction with another fertility therapy to boost your chances of conceiving a child.
  2. Female Infertility

  3. Female infertility is a common problem, leading to several treatments ranging from drugs to invitro fertilization and surrogacy. HCG is most commonly associated with pregnancy, but it is also used in women who are not pregnant. Your doctor will prescribe the hormone in either pill or injection form. You will receive most likely daily injections of the hormone, which will help to stimulate ovulation. If you are using invitro fertilization, HCG will be used to trigger ovulation for egg harvesting.

If you experience pain in your abdominal area or do not ovulate, talk to you doctor as this may be the cause of too much HCG in your system. It may even lead to a cyst on your ovaries, which can be a serious condition that may require surgery and lead to further infertility problems. Your doctor will discuss the risks with you before beginning treatment. HCG is only to be used under the strict supervision of a doctor as it is a prescription medication used primarily by injection. It can be used in conjunction with other fertility medications such as clomid and is often paired in such a way.
