Clown Face Painting Tips

Clowns have been painting their faces for decades and the designs and colors they paint are an important part of their overall look as clowns. The paint that clowns use must be a specific type so that it doesn't run with sweat. The application must look complete and professional. A clown is a live entertainer and applying a consistent face paint is part of the job of being a clown.

    1. Tools

      • Certain tools are required to successfully apply face paint on a clown. You'll need face paint in every color that you plan to use and a white pencil to create an outline for specific designs to fill with colored paint. Sponges and brushes are also needed--which ones and how many will depend on how elaborate a design you are planning, but at least two sponges and one brush are recommended.

      Preparation

      • Before painting, wash your face thoroughly. This removes all the oil, dirt and loose hairs on your face, which can keep the paint and powder from sticking and cause it to run or crumble. Outline your entire face with the white pencil, creating shapes on your cheeks, nose or forehead in a paint-by-number type outline. Be careful when working near the eyes and, in general, go slowly and relax so you don't make a mistake and have to start over. If you don't have a pencil, use a small brush, which will work just as well.

      Painting

      • For filling the area with white, use a sponge. Dip it in the white paint and work slowly and carefully from the outside in to the middle. Cover it in a circular motion, moving toward the center of the face. Be generous with the paint, as it may take a couple of coats to cover the skin. After covering the face with white paint, set it by covering it with white or clear powder. Now that the base is done, paint the creatively using a variety of colors around the eyes, on the cheeks, on the tip of the nose and the lips. Make the lips extra red and the area around the eyes sky blue. Reference old clown photos for inspiration.
