- You will need a hammer--16 oz-- cutting shears, razor knife and caulk gun. You should also consider purchasing a roofing nail pouch in order to keep your tools together and nearby; however, this is not absolutely essential. You will need a ladder for climbing onto the roof, as well.
- Depending on the cause of the leak, you may need the following materials: roll of rubberized roofing membrane--roll is 6 inches wide and 50 feet long-- step flashing, matching shingles and exterior clear caulk. You may need some or all of these materials; however, you should determine the cause of the leak before purchasing any of these materials.
- If your skylight is leaking around the edges where the flange meets the roof, then you should remove the shingles from around the skylight and re-flash the skylight. The flashing should be step flashing and should be applied from the bottom and up toward the top of the skylight. Wrap the skylight flange with rubberized roofing tape before you flash the skylight. The membrane will help seal the skylight and will also seal around any penetrating nails. Use clear caulking to caulk any cracks or holes in the skylight; the clear caulking won't show up on the skylight material after it dries. Make sure that all of the rubber seals are pliable and functioning on your skylight. If the seals become dry and brittle, they may leak. Seal them with clear caulk if necessary.
