Homemade wall hangings are an affordable and easy way to add color and personality to your home. Fabric is an ideal option; however, how you hang your fabric may depend upon the style of your home. Fabric wall hangings can also help provide sound insulation. You can even use heavy or quilted wall hangings over windows in the winter to reduce drafts.

    Picking a Wall Hanging

  1. Homemade fabric wall hangings can range from modern and chic to warm and homey. Choose bold, graphic prints for a modern look. Use artist-created screen print fabrics, hand-painted or dyed fabrics or beautiful handwovens. Create a sweet or romantic look by hanging floral print fabrics or pastel quilts. Country quilts and rustic print fabrics can help your home look warm and welcoming.
  2. Quick and Easy Options

  3. For quick and easy wall hangings, use embroidery or quilting hoops. Mount fabric into embroidery hoops, then hang in groupings. A few hooped fabrics can be hung together to accent a bedroom or sewing room, but you could also create a larger wall hanging using many fabrics in different-sized hoops. Use the same concept for a more modern wall hanging by replacing the embroidery hoops with simple black frames or even clear lucite frames.
  4. Quilted and Tapestry Wall Hangings

  5. Small quilts can be used as wall hangings. If you have a large wall surface, you can even hang a larger bed-sized quilt. Handmade or purchased tapestries can also be hung as wall hangings. Stitch ribbon or fabric loops onto your quilt or tapestry or sew a pocket across the back of the wall hanging. Hang onto the curtain rod of your choice on any wall in your home.
  6. Mounting Fabric

  7. Any fabric can be mounted onto canvas stretcher bars, which are available at art supply stores. Staple the fabric into place onto assembled stretcher bars, pulling taut. As an alternative, use spray adhesive to adhere fabric to foam core, working carefully to avoid wrinkles and create a smooth finish.
