What Do I Need to Do to Renew My Panamanian Passport?

Save

If you are abroad, and your Panamanian passport is set to expire prior to your return to Panama, don't worry, you can renew it by mail. Plan ahead, though, because it takes eight weeks. You can also apply for a travel document from the Panamanian Embassy, which takes two to three business days, but if you are traveling out of the U.S., you must have a passport.

Documents

To renew your passport, according to the Panamanian Embassy, the following documents will be needed: two photocopies of the Application Form, completed and properly signed, in identical fashion as your Cedula; two photocopies of the Signature form, in identical fashion as your Cedula; two photocopies of your old passport (only first and second page); two photocopies of your Panamanian Cedula (Picture Identification Card) and two photocopies of your short form/half-page, computer birth certificate. If you do not have it, you need to request a new one for an additional $10. A link to the application form is included in the reference section.

Photographs

You must submit four recent 2-by-2-inch color photos, with a white background and a frontal view. Do not wear color contact lenses; they are unacceptable. For women, pictures with low cleavage, sleeveless shirts or wigs will not be accepted. Your face and ears must show. For men, your picture will not be accepted if you wear earrings, long hair that is not tied in the back, or braids if they are not tied in the back.

Other Documents

If your passport has not yet expired, send a letter in Spanish requesting that it be annulled. A link to a template for this letter is included in the reference section. If you've gotten married, you must first register your marriage with the Panama Civil Registry and request a new Cedula. You must register a divorce with the Panama Civil Registry. If you married and wish to continue to use your maiden name, follow the procedure for marriage.

Fees and Miscellaneous

A renewed passport costs $125 or $100 if you are a Panamanian retiree. An annulment costs $9. If you lost your birth certificate, a replacement costs $10. Make all checks payable to the Consulate of Panama. They accept certified checks or money orders. You must include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of documents. If your passport was lost, you must complete a lost passport form. A link is included in the reference section. See the forms for mailing information.
