Most people experience facial flushing when they are embarrassed or angry. It can also occur because of a variety of other reasons, such as alcohol consumption or allergic reactions. If you are experiencing facial flushing, your face will become red and may start to feel warm or hot. Some people may also experience redness around the neck and chest. These symptoms occur because of a sudden increase of blood flow to the face. Fortunately, there are several different treatment options available that can help stop facial flushing.

Avoid Triggers

One of the easiest ways to stop facial flushing is by avoiding the triggers causing it. For example, stay away from hot drinks, spicy foods and extreme temperatures as these all cause facial flushing. Similarly, avoid certain foods and beverages that you have a bad reaction to. Avoiding these triggers will help stop the symptoms from reoccurring and will also allow the problem to resolve on its own.

Self-Care Treatments

For quick relief from facial flushing, soak a clean towel under cool water, ring it out slightly and then apply the damp cloth to your face. This treatment is especially beneficial for people whose symptoms are triggered by spicy foods, extreme temperatures or hot beverages. Drinking cold fluids will also have the same effect and can help reduce the heat from your face.

If you suffer from rosacea, a skin disorder in which the main symptom is facial flushing, certain herbal remedies can be a treatment option. According to Dr. Wu in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, green tea can be very effective in treating rosacea symptoms because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities. Similarly, licorice also has anti-inflammatory capabilities that can help reduce redness in the face.

Medical Treatments

If you have tried the suggestions above, but you are still experiencing persistent facial flushing, then contact a medical professional. Your doctor may determine the problem is being caused by an allergic reaction. In this case, your physician will probably recommend taking an allergy medication such as Benadryl. However, Benadryl and other allergy medications provide temporary relief, and long-term relief can only be achieved if you avoid exposure to the substance that triggered the facial reaction.

If your doctor determines that you are suffering from the skin disorder rosacea, you may be prescribed topical antibiotics. According to an article on Wellness.com, this can help reduce the redness and inflammation often associated with the skin disorder.
