Around the World Game Instructions

Around the World is a basketball game that is often used as a shooting drill. The goal is to go "around the world," or around the three-point line, by making consecutive shots in a certain order. Around the World helps with shooting skills while still being a fun and competitive game.

  1. Set-up

    • Most Around the World games incorporate five to 15 shots around the three-point line. The most basic set-up is to create shooting spots on both baselines, a shooting spot between the middle of the hoop and the baseline, and at the top of the key behind the three point line. You can add additional spots to add shots or vary them. Set a shooting order--only one player may shoot at a time.

    "Chance It"

    • The first player in the shooting order will start on one of the two baselines. He or she must make the shot to advance to the next spot (the spot between dead center of the hoop and baseline). The player gets two shots per spot. Make the first shot and you automatically advance to the next. Miss the first shot and you have two options. You can "chance it," which means you'll take another shot from that spot. Make the shot and you advance. Miss the shot and you go back to the starting line and lose your turn.

    "Pass"

    • The player may also select to "pass" on the second shot from the spot. That means the next players shoot, but when the ball comes back to him, he can shoot from where he left off. Both options make sense in certain strategies. "Chance it' is obviously more risky but gives you another opporunity to continue going around the world. "Pass" is conservative, but wise if you're well around the world and no one is close to you.

    Winner

    • The first player to successfully make a shot from each spot wins the game. The first player in line might run the table and never give the others an opportunity to shoot, or the game might go through several rounds with several "chances" and "passes."
