Eye Makeup Tips for Drag Queens

Drag queens can do anything they want with their eye makeup. They can aim for a natural stage look or go for all out glam, punk or anything in between. The key is to use pigment reach materials (such as MAC and Make Up For Ever) and apply them lightly, layering them to make more dramatic looks.

    Base

  1. Normal foundation and concealer are fine for concealing flaws and masculine details, but if you want your eye makeup to stay on, you need to use a special eyeshadow base. The base will prevent your eyelids from getting greasy and causing your makeup to smudge or fade. Some good eye makeup bases (also known as primers) are Urban Decay Primer Potion and L'Oreal De-Crease.
  2. Eyebrows

  3. Even though you'll be covering your natural brows with brow wax and sealer, you should still choose an eyebrow pencil that's close to your natural color so that it complements your coloring. Then use light, feathery strokes to fill in your brows. You can layer the strokes if you want your eyebrows to look darker. Natural-looking brows should start straight up from the inner corner of your eye, about half an inch to an inch (depending on the size of your eyes and where you want the brow to be) up. You'll need to end the brow in a diagonal line from the outer corner of your eye up to the same height as your starting point. You might want to make small marks to note the starting and ending points and then fill in the arch in between them.
  4. Eyelashes

  5. Unless you were genetically blessed with long eyelashes that curl up naturally, you will want to use fake eyelashes. For a precise and natural look, you can apply individual lashes to augment your natural eyelashes. For a theatrical look, choose full sets of fake eyelashes. If you want to make a really glamorous impression, try using fake eyelashes with glitter on the ends. Apply the eyelash glue (also called spirit gum) to the fake eyelashes, not to your skin.
  6. Eyeliner

  7. Liquid eyeliner will give you the most precise and long-lasting line and gives you the flexibility of drawing a thin or a thick line. Liquid eyeliner, however, requires a very steady hand and is difficult to fix if you make a mistake. If your hands aren't very steady, you can dip an angled brush under water and then dip it into your dark pigment to make the lines around your eyes. Make sure to follow your lash lines and to extend the lines at the outer corners to make your eyes look bigger.
  8. Eyeshadow

  9. Drag queens can use any shades of eyeshadow, but a basic rule is to use the lighter colors between the crease and the brow bone, the darkest colors in the crease and the medium colors on the lid. Using the lightest colors near your brow bone will make your eyes look bigger and gently shading them outwards (to the outer end of your eyebrow) will make them pop.
