- Saline solution is safe and effective for treating sinus congestion. Boil a liter of water and add a teaspoon of salt. Allow the salt to dissolve and then remove from heat. When the water is completely cooled, store in a sterile bottle. Use a dropper or nasal syringe to put a few drops into each nostril, allowing it to drip into the nasal passages.
- Spices like black pepper, cayenne pepper, horseradish and hot peppers can really clear the sinuses. Try adding any of these spices to your regular food. If you have a cold, you can add some black pepper or cayenne pepper to hot chicken soup for a tasty sinus remedy. Spicy ethnic foods like Chinese, Mexican or Indian cuisine can do the trick as well.
- Another effective remedy for clearing sinus congestion is a few drops of eucalyptus oil added to a small pot of boiling water. Put three or four drops of eucalyptus oil into boiling water and remove from heat. Drape a towel over your head and lean over the pot, breathing in the steam for five to 10 minutes.
- Tea tree oil, like eucalyptus oil, is good for clearing the sinuses. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a cup of boiling water and breathe in the steam for five to 10 minutes.
- Try placing a vaporizer near you while you rest. The steam will help clear away congestion. Adding vinegar to the water in the vaporizer is an even more effective solution.
