Secret Trout Bait Recipe

Explore America's Campgrounds

Many individuals enjoy fishing for trout in mountain streams and lakes. For some, the challenge of catching wary trout becomes a lifelong fascination and pursuit. According to many trout fishermen, what sets the amateur apart from the consummate trout angler is the willingness to create and produce homemade trout bait. Often closely guarded, many secret trout recipes are handed down from generation to generation.

The Ingredients

Assemble 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of water, 2 tbsp. of cod liver oil, and anise oil (two to three drops). The flour and water will be used to bind the other ingredients together and help form the dough balls. Cod liver oil is highly "fishy" and disperses well underwater to help attract trout. Anise oil is perhaps the bait's secret weapon. It's a powerful oil that has a licorice scent and drives trout wild. It is important to check local regulations to ensure anise oil is allowed in trout baits.

Making the Bait

In an old mixing bowl, add the all-purpose flour and slowly add the water, mixing as you go. Work with the mixture until a dough begins to form. Add the cod liver oil and anise oil and continue to mix thoroughly. The ideal result is a somewhat dry paste that allows for easy forming into dough balls. If the mixture is too thick, simply add more water. Too thin? Add more flour to adjust the consistency.

Storing and Using Trout Bait

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set in the refrigerator to slightly chill. Remember to cover the mixture unless you are OK with everything smelling like fish and anise oil. When chilled, remove the mixture and pinch out a small amount of dough. Chilling the dough will help in forming the dough balls. Roll the mixture in the palm of your hands and adjust the amount until you have a small ball approximately 1/2 inch in diameter. This is about the same size as a salmon egg and an ideal size for attracting and catching trout.
