Make a Colonial Hat

A classic colonial hat (or tricorne) is simple to make using just a few easily obtained items. This style of headwear was most popular during the 1700’s and was worn by most men living in either Europe or in any of the European colonies, including the thirteen original British colonies here in North America. Although no longer a fashion statement, the tricorne is today seen in films, plays, and costume parties whenever this period of history is to be dramatized. The instructions below will help you to recreate this style of colonial hat.

Step 2

Determine which part of the hat will be positioned over the brow of the person who will wear it. Turn the hat so that the front end of the hat will be pointing away from you.

Step 3

Thread your needle with the thread and place a secure knot in the end of it.

Step 4

Fold one side of the brim up and back. Secure it into position with several firm stitches to the portion of the hat that will rest upon the wearer’s head. Keep the stitches confined to a small area.

Step 5

Repeat Step 4 on the opposite side of the hat, making sure that the two sides are as symmetrical as possible.
