- A long, sturdy barrette can hold all the hair together at the back of the head in a ponytail. Brush the hair back from the sides and up from the base of the neck, gathering the hair together at the crown of the head as you normally would when preparing a ponytail. Slide the barrette around the hair and fasten. Spread the hair out in the barrette to make a broader, flat ponytail. The barrette gives the average ponytail the illusion of fullness. It's also a more elegant look than a regular ponytail.
- Brush the section of hair from the front and top of each ear toward the top of your head. Gather the two sides at the top and use one long barrette to secure the two sections together at the top center of your head. This will keep hair out of your eyes, while still keeping the back of your hair down and long. You can achieve almost the same look using two barrettes in this hairdo by brushing upwards from each ear, and securing with a barrette at each side of your head instead of on top.
- A fun hairstyle for little kids is to brush out a bunch of little sections of hair and securing them each flat to the head with a small, colorful plastic barrette. You can start at the top of one ear, taking a 1-inch section of hair and securing it, then working your way over the top of the head and across to the top of the other ear. This makes a colorful headband for your child. Another option for kids is to take bigger 2-inch sections of hair and braid them one at a time. Secure the ends with a barrette instead of an elastic. The end result is a head full of braids with fun barrettes on the end of each one.
