Acne effects many people, and many choose to treat their acne using natural methods. Those with African-American skin tones need to be careful when using certain natural acne remedies, however, as they can cause an unbalanced complexion. Such remedies include lemon juice or baking soda. Luckily, there is an effective strategy that will clear brown and black skin tones without causing areas of skin discoloration.

    Cleanse with a Gentle Soap

  1. Most commercial soaps contain strong ingredients that can irritate and inflame the skin, which can exacerbate acne. Commercial soaps can also cause excessive dryness, which can cause darker skin tones to become patchy and discolored in areas. Instead of using a soap that contains chemical ingredients, use a soap that is formulated for people with sensitive skin types. Soaps designed for sensitive skin will not cause the skin to become red or itchy like commercially milled soaps can.
  2. Treat with a Light Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

  3. Benzoyl peroxide cream is a very powerful acne-fighting product, and it might seem logical to use the highest strength cream in order to eliminate acne quickly. For African-American skin, however, it is best to use a lighter benzoyl peroxide cream to avoid irritating the skin, which can cause blotchiness or discolorations. Use a nickel-sized amount, and smooth it over the skin using your fingertips. Continue to gently spread it over the skin until it has completely soaked in.
  4. Moisturize with an Oil-Free Lotion

  5. Whenever benzoyl peroxide creams are used on the skin, it becomes important to re-hydrate the skin using a moisturizer. Select a moisturizer or lotion that is oil-free, meaning that it does not contain any oils that could clog the pores, which would contribute to or exacerbate acne. Selecting an oil-free moisturizer that is also designed for sensitive skin types will also ensure that the moisturizer will not inflame the skin or cause a negative interaction with the benzoyl peroxide cream. Use a dime-sized amount, and gently massage in onto the skin with her fingers. Continue to massage in the moisturizer until it has been absorbed into the skin. Using an oil-free lotion or moisturizer will allow darker skin tones to be clear, as well as soft and evenly-balanced.
