Anime characters often wear strange outfits. These outfits can range from traditional Japanese clothing to futuristic flight jumpsuits. The reason for the broad range of clothing is due to wildly varied subject matter of anime. One unifying factor for each character's clothing in anime is that it must be striking and original.

Many anime films are set in feudal Japan. Samurai warriors settle scores with steel blades in these epic anime films. Creating the traditional robes of a samurai warrior is a must for anime artists who want to incorporate these elements.

Draw a "V" shape over the character's chest to create the collar. Attach a diagonal line to the bottom left of the "V". This will complete the inner robes. Draw a sash with a wide band across the waist. Create the outer robes with two vertical lines going down the left and right side of the chest. Add large sleeves with trapezoid shapes around the arms. Create the appearance of baggy pants with slightly curved lines coming down from the sash.

Steam Punk is a sub-genre in which great technical advances have been made with mechanical devices that run on steam and gears. This is type of setting is utilized in anime and Japanese video games like Final Fantasy to create a unique environment. Characters in Steam Punk often wear leather flight or work suits. Large eye goggles may also be worn on top of a character's head.

Create a ribbed effect on your Steam Punk character's clothes with small curved lines running up and down the limbs and torso. These lines do not have to run all the way across the body. Add boots by simply drawing a horizontal line across the shin. Add large work gloves with a band across each wrist. Create a belt with a band across the waist. Draw the goggles with two circles on top of the head. Connect these together with a band running across the head and under the two circles.
  4. Skimpy Anime Clothes

  5. Skimpy clothing is often the norm in anime.
Skimpy clothing is often the norm in anime.
Often anime characters dressed in impractical ways for the situation at hand. Male knights may have only shoulder armor and a loin cloth on. A female soldier or police officer might wear the equivalent of a swimsuit and thigh-high boots. This is simply part of the culture of anime.

Create a skimpy clothing look by drawing lines across the body of the figure. For instance, to create boots simply draw a curved line across the thigh of your figure. Create a one-piece suit by drawing a "V" shape across the hips and another across the upper chest for a collar. Add a curved line to the left and right side of the torso for sleeves.
