Size
-
The size of the plant will determine the size of the plant stand. The platform should be 1 to 2 inches wider than the base of the pot. It can be a simple square piece of plywood, a circle or a hexagon. Screw together four pieces of 1-by-1 inch lumber cut to fit into a square on the underside of the platform. If the plant weighs more than 25 lb., add a fifth supporting crosspiece. Affix four weight-bearing casters to the four corners on the bottom to complete the construction. All wood should be sanded and can be painted, stained, varnished or left plain.
Decor and More
-
With a little more effort, fancy, decorative plant stands can be built to display or showcase favorite or showy plants. Carts, shelves, pedestals and three-legged stands are all attractive in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. Simple items can be used as plants stands as well. Plastic or wooden step stools, milk crates, old chairs and even cinder blocks can be used effectively to situate and display plants.
