If you have ever sprouted mung beans, you know how they are a daily source of delight. The mung bean is also known as golden gram, chop suey and green gram bean. It can be used for livestock, and human consumption. Most of the American production comes from Oklahoma. The United States is responsible for consuming almost twenty million pounds per year with three quarters being imported. Mung beans are a legume similar to the adzuki bean. Used primarily for fresh sprouts, they are shipped to restaurants and grocery stores.
Growing in India originally , the mung bean is widely grown in Asia, South America and Africa. In the United States it was originally called the Chickasaw pea, around the early 1800's.

Light vs. darkness experiment
If you want to determine how the growth of the mung bean is affected by light and the amount of carbon dioxide, use a soda bottle and place 10 dry mung beans inside. Rip a sheet of paper towel into shreds and stuff the shreds into the soda bottle. Now fill only the cap of the bottle with water and pour that into the bottle. Tightly close the cap. You cannot reopen this during the experiment. Now go through this procedure again, as you will need to determine one that receives light and one that is dark. Cover one soda bottle with foil.That will be the dark one. Place the bottles near the window. As you measure the sprouts each day, record the growth of five sprouts. After ten days you can create a graph to see any changes in the light bottle versus the dark covered bottle. You have now determined the effect of light on the mung bean.
Experiment to determine the necessary part of the seed for growth
Take one plastic cup and fill it with soil. Then punch three holes in the bottom forming a triangle. Place two half beans and two full beans in the cup. Place the cup into a paper bag and seal it. Wait a week. Measure plants with ruler. This experiment will help to clarify the needs of the seed to grow to full maturity.
