- Purchase the Windows Anytime Upgrade - Home to Ultimate Edition of Vista because the Home and Ultimate versions are different types of software. You can buy the software online and download it, but it's highly recommended you purchase a DVD copy of the software from an authorized retailer. There are two upgrade discs available, and the one you should buy depends on your type of Vista: Home Basic to Ultimate and Home Premium to Ultimate.
- Back up your computer to a DVD, hard disk or other media, just in case something goes wrong with the upgrade. Many programs can help you back up your files and can do the task with few problems. Be sure to have enough space on the media you use to handle your entire PC. Consider buying an external hard drive exclusively for this purpose.
- Run the Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD on your computer, and follow the instructions to install the upgraded operating system.
- Check your computer to make sure no personal files were lost during the upgrade installation. If you lost files, restore them using the backup you made.
