Homemade Wall Mounted Dip Bar

Dips are good exercises that help develop and tone your upper body. Typically a body weight exercise, it is an old-school workout that doesn't require anything more than you and two objects close and high enough that can support your weight as you perform it. In this article, you will learn how to dip and materials you could use to create your own homemade dip bar that will mount to your wall.

The Dip: A Background

  • A dip is an exercise that works your triceps, shoulders, chest and parts of your back. The exercise consists of using the two bars on each side of you to grasp onto with your hands, hoist your body up so that your elbows lock and your arms are straight. Then, slowly and controlled, lower your body so that your shoulders dip below your elbows, then push yourself straight back up into the beginning position. Sound simple? It is. But try to go for long reps, and you might not find yourself saying that.

Materials

  • When building a wall mounted dip bar, you must have a wall strong enough to bear the load and materials that can withstand the weight of your body. The strongest materials that will mount to your wall while also holding your weight primarily tends to be galvanized pipe. Mounting a dip bar on the wall is a bit trickier as it requires a good amount of skill not to destroy the wall in the process.

One of the best techniques is to build a rack that easily attaches to the wall with the use of flanges. In Reference 2, you will find the best technique at accomplishing this design that was done by a bodybuilder sick of going to the gym. He designed a multi-purpose rack that used many different exercises and found all of the materials (the galvanized pipe, elbows and flanges) at his local Home Depot. It was strong enough to support his weight and not bring down the wall.
