Household Tips for Absorbing Odors

Bad smells pop up for a number of reasons and in many different places around the home. Eliminate everything from pet odors to odors in the bathroom to bad smells in the refrigerator and the freezer, Some odor removal methods are homemade while others are store-bought. Keep in mind that odors sometimes have a cause that you can eliminate; simply covering up a bad smell instead of dealing with the source is a bad idea.

  1. Removing Odors From Carpets

    • To get smells out of carpets, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, and let it sit for a while. Then, vacuum it up, and the smell should be gone. Soda water also works well to get rid of carpet odors, especially when there is a trouble spot on the carpet, such as vomit or pet urination. Apply soda water to the affected carpet, and soak it up with a cloth.

    Removing Refrigerator Odors

    • Remove refrigerator odors in several ways. Place a plain charcoal briquette in the refrigerator in a container with air holes. The charcoal will absorb the bad smells. Keep a box of baking soda in the refrigerator, and replace it every three months. Also place fresh coffee grounds in the refrigerator to absorb bad smells.

    General Room Smell Removal

    • To remove odors around the room, place bowls of white distilled vinegar in each of the corners. To create a very pleasant smell, take a plastic container, and punch holes in the top. Soak cotton balls with either extracts or essential oils, such as lemon, peppermint, orange or vanilla. Use coffee grounds, and put them in an old sock. Hang them in a closet to remove any musty smells.
