Home Remedies to Kill Ticks

There is no doubt about it: Ticks are one of nature's most disgusting and annoying pests, not to mention dangerous and disease carrying. Getting rid of them from your home, pets and even your own body can be difficult and expensive. Fortunately, there are effective home remedies for ticks that are both cheap and easy to make.

Dish Detergent

  • Any type of dishwashing liquid is effective in killing ticks on your pet. Dish soap like Dawn and Palmolive work well. Apply a generous amount to the animal. It needs to be quite a bit more than you would normally apply for a bath. Let the soap sit on your pet for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse well and allow your animal to dry indoors.

  • Regular table salt works to kill ticks in the house and on your pet. Sprinkle salt on the floor and upholstery. Sprinkle a very light layer on furniture before going to bed and vacuum it off in the morning. Sprinkle a heavy layer of salt on carpeted floors. Leave the salt on the carpets for a week or more and then vacuum it off. Salt kills the larvae and eggs of ticks and scratches away at their bodies until they come apart.

Mow and Water

  • Ticks thrive in warm, dry conditions. They also live in tall grasses and woody areas. A simple way to cut down the ticks in your yard and therefore cut down the amount inside your home, on your pets and on you is to mow the grass. Keep your yard and any adjacent properties mowed short. Because ticks thrive in dry conditions, make sure to keep your lawn watered well. Use a sprinkler in the evening or spray with a garden hose.
